After the relatively mild initial stage, the gums will begin to pull away from the teeth. Empty spaces called periodontal pockets will form. These openings provide a perfect environment for bacteria and plaque. As the pockets become filled with unwanted material, the condition will spread. Ultimately, this can lead to bone deterioration and tooth loss.
